Professional Equine Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Chambers

Written by octavio on: February 21, 2022

Equine Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a drug-free and completely non-invasive treatment option for horses that helps treat many different conditions and diseases. With HBOT technology, horses receive a high concentration of pure oxygen in a completely sealed and pressurized environment. This veterinary treatment option can greatly improve equine performance while keeping horses safe and calm.

Hyperbaric oxygenation treatment is a highly therapeutic method of treatment that is highly beneficial to equine patients. Using a safe hyperbaric treatment chamber designed specifically for horses, these treatments can help equine patients return to their peak performance levels with just a few visits.

Complete Equine Treatment for a Variety of Health Conditions

In addition to providing improvements to general well-being and performance, equine HBOT treatments can help with many different equine conditions, including:

  • Desmitis (ligament disease)
  • Bone fractures
  • Acute laminitis (Founder)
  • Colic
  • Neurological disease
  • Tendonitis
  • Infertility
  • Lyme disease
  • Infection wounds
  • Severe muscle damage
  • Joint infections
  • Enteritis and endotoxemia
  • Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhaging (Bleeders)
  • Rhodococcus pneumonia in foals
  • Severe necrosis (e.g. snake and spider bites, toxic substances, etc.)
  • Behavioral issues

How Safe is HBOT Treatment for Horses?

Hyperbaric oxygen treatments are designed to speed up the normal healing process and can be incredibly beneficial in situations where other types of treatment have failed, including those used to treat non-healing wounds and equine athlete injury. Treatment with HBOT chambers often results in improved demeanor and attitude, as the chamber provides a quiet and completely stress-free environment for healing.

Equine hyperbaric oxygen chambers allow for constant video monitoring of the horse throughout the treatment process, and the technician can interrupt or cancel the session if the animal becomes distressed or if there are any complications. To prevent problems during treatment, the hyperbaric oxygen chamber can be constantly monitored via video and monitoring of pure oxygen levels, along with equine vital sign monitoring.

How Does it Work?

Equine HBOT treatments are typically customized for individual equine needs. The number of hyperbaric treatments required varies based on the particular ailment or injury being treated. Equine HBOT treatments are performed in a specially designed hyperbaric chamber that is typically fitted with a horse stall and patient monitoring equipment. Horses are fitted with a comfortable facial mask which allows pure oxygen to flow freely throughout the body. This special type of hyperbaric treatment is designed to be low stress, and typically takes about an hour to complete.

Although there are some risks and side effects involved with equine hyperbaric treatment chambers, they are very rare and most go away soon after treatment has ended. Typical side effects can include a build-up of sinus pressure and oxygen toxicity, however, most equine patients experience no side effects or other difficulties during treatment.
